Alveolar Bioreactor up close! The circle chamber in the center is where the lung cells will go. I’m starting to enjoy this project even more, now that we have a device running. We are working on culturing our own lung cells and soon they will be put in.
Alveolar Bioreactor set up with food coloring! It is really nice for visualization, but it gets everywhere! The red and blue makes it look a bit like a “mad scientist’s” laboratory though, with lots of tubes going everywhere
With a Bachelor’s of Science in Molecular Biology and Microbiology and I also completed a minor in Psychology.
I can finally call myself a Molecular Biologist!!!
Next step is my PhD in Biomedical Sciences this fall. I can’t wait!
Lab technicians can make money, but the real money available in the research track is being a professor and/or running a research lab. If you are good at it, you can publish lots and even start side companies and get money.
Some people have recommended that the best thing to do is go to Med school even if you just want to do research. MD’s can do research just like a PhD can, but they get paid more. I’m in PhD though, because I prefer how the program is set up.
Good luck and feel free to ask anymore questions
I can’t wait to start graduate school.
In other news…..expiration dates suck. We did a whole semester of cell culturing HEK cells and at the very end when we finally tranduced them with the BacMam 2.0 System, we saw no fluorescence! This system uses an insect virus to tag GFP to the actin in our cells. The only possible explanation I can think of is the expiration date because we tried using 500 microliters of the stuff when it only came with 1 ml. I guess I will have to try again in the summer if I can.
For my main lab, we started putting together our device today! We are going to run it a few times to test leakage and then put some dyes in and see if the water is running through properly. I can’t wait until we get cells into it. We may be growing our own, which hopefully I can play a big part in. For now I am just going over tons of sensor data and picking out the best trials. Hopefully I will have 2 publications by the end of summer.
Stroke. Coloured angiogram of the brain of a 48 year old patient after a stroke. There are fewer blood vessels visible compared to normal. This is due to a blocked middle cerebral artery causing areas of ischaemia to parts of the brain. Strokes can be instantly fatal, or may pass unnoticed. Symptoms can include muscle weakness, behavioural changes or paralysis.
